  1. Mature individuals willing to work with terminally ill patients and their families.
  2. High School Diploma or recipient of G.E.D. preferred.
  3. Graduate of a hospice training program.


  1. Ability to understand the physical, psychosocial and spiritual concerns/problems of terminally ill patients and their families.
  2. Ability to be self-directed and function independently.
  3. Ability to relate well with patients, families, community at large and health care professionals.
  4. Ability to be compassionate and communicate effectively, utilizing appropriate listening skills.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  6. Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
  7. Ability to respond and function appropriately in crisis situations.
  8. Demonstrated competency in defined areas.
  9. Ability to be at work as scheduled and alert/awake.


  1. Performs support activities as prescribed in the Plan of Care including but not limited to supporting independence, providing companionship, and providing respite for families.
    1. Patient sitting / companionship
    2. Errand assistance
    3. Grocery shopping
    4. Meal preparation
    5. Assistance with simple personal care tasks
    6. Letter writing
    7. Household assistance
  2. Documents visits and phone calls on progress notes for the clinical record in a timely fashion as described in agency policy.
  3. Provides emotional support to patients and families in a manner that fosters independence and affirms existing strengths.
  4. Volunteer services are provided to patients/families as part of the hospice IDT oversight responsibilities. Volunteer activities are provided under the supervision of a designated hospice employee and in accordance with the plan of care.
  5. Participates in patient care conferences and/or reports to Volunteer Coordinator on a regular basis and whenever changes in patient condition warrant.
  6. Attends volunteer continuing education and support meetings.
  7. Provides office assistance.
  8. Participates in fund raising activities and/or projects.
  9. Provides support to family members in the period of bereavement in coordination with other team members.
  10. Practices universal precautions in all patient contacts and uses special isolation techniques as warranted by patient diagnosis.
  11. Keeps all patient/family information confidential.
  12. It is the volunteer's obligation to adhere to the organization's standards of conduct. It is the volunteer's duty to report any potential misconduct or violation of the organization's standards of conduct, federal or state laws and regulations.
  13. It is the volunteer's responsibility to participate in compliance with staff training and education programs.
  14. Adheres to the HIPAA security policies, procedures and practices at Hospice of Wichita Falls and understands that sanctions will be applied for non-compliance.
  15. Volunteer understands volunteer's roles at Hospice of Wichita Fall and volunteer's attitude reflects and appreciation and support of volunteers.
  16. Behaves in accordance with Hospice of Wichita Falls' policies/procedures demonstrating a professional manner in action and provides service to others in a willing and courteous way.
  17. Participates in departmental and/or agency wide Performance Improvement activities, as appropriate.
  18. Demonstrates the ability to be at work each day on time and maintain a good attendance record.
  19. Demonstrates team approach to Hospice care, equally supporting all other members of the team. Evaluates own needs for support and uses identified system to meet the need.
  20. Performs other duties as requested by supervisor.

Personal/Professional Growth

  1. Seeks opportunities for personal/professional growth which includes attending seminars and continuing educational programs and demonstrates the ability to receive constructive performance feedback.
  2. Attends (or views tape in timely manner) all mandatory in-service programs and staff meetings.


  1. Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, frequently squat, bend to the floor, reach over the shoulder, kneel, twist and sit.
  2. Must have visual acuity to continuously note changes in patient condition (breathing, color, skin integrity).
  3. Must be able to deal effectively with stress, patients and their families, multiple tasks, noise, interruptions, and emotional loss, and to work cooperatively with other members of the interdisciplinary team while maintaining a pleasant and professional demeanor.
  4. Must be able to travel to and access patient homes where conditions may be adverse due to weather, environment or patients' lifestyles. (Home care volunteers only)
